If someone asked you, “Who are you?” what would your first thought/response be? Would you say, I’m a – father/mother, teacher, Yankees fan, American, divorcee, cancer survivor, registered Republican, accountant, mountain climber, ex-con, CEO?
Who are you? Does your identity (for good or bad) come from your sports interests, your successes or mistakes, how you vote, your nationality, marital status, a past illness, how you make a living or spend your leisure time?
In God’s eyes, we are not what we do, nor does He define us by our failures or our successes. As God’s children, we come from good stock. No one/nothing can change that. Our value, worth, identity, our inheritance, come from our new bloodline, from a Father Who promises that we are heirs to His throne.
In 2 Corinthians 5:17, the Bible tells Christians – anyone who is in Christ is a new creation. The old has passed away, the new has come! As a Christian, as a child of God, we are given a new nature. We have a new Father. All that belongs to Him, is now ours. So you are no longer a slave, but a son; and since you are a son, you are also an heir through God (Galatians 4:7). And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed and heirs according to the promise (Galatians 3:29).
I’ve had some ‘failures’ lately. Nothing terrible or that the LORD can’t change with a word from His mouth, but things aren’t going the way I planned or thought they would. So I started to feel bad about myself and began to question my value. I was having spiritual amnesia, forgetting that my circumstances will never define who I am!
Then the Holy Spirit reminded me of who I am and most importantly, of Whose I am! That if/when I fail, I am not a failure, because my identity cannot be changed. I forever remain, a child of God.
When hard times come, when our circumstances, professional title, marital status, or health, take a turn for the worst, there is one thing that is certain. You are loved and nothing can ever separate you from God’s love for you. “No one will snatch them out of My hand (John 10: 28).
It is God who defines you and me. And He does not define us by our net wealth, mistakes or by our successes. His love, like all His attributes, are perfect. We can’t ever add or take away from His perfection. When He looks at you, He sees His perfect Son, Jesus. You are beloved, chosen, bought with a price, and your name is written in an eternal Book – the Lamb’s book of life!
No one can tell you who you are, belittle you, degrade or put you down. You come from good stock, from royalty (Jesus – King of kings). Walk with your head up, you are of great worth and are loved with an everlasting love.
